“Over My Head” is Track 5 and the lead US single from Fleetwood Mac’s 10th studio album, the self-titled Fleetwood Mac (1975).
“[‘Over My Head’] was the last track we kept,” Christine McVie recalls.” And we didn’t really know what we were going to do with it. All it had was a vocal, a dobro guitar and a drum track — we were weren’t sure what to add to that. So I put on a little Vox Continental organ and Lindsey added some electric guitar, and it developed this really pleasant atmosphere. It didn’t batter you. But it was the last track we thought would be a single” (Graham, 1978, p. 134-35). An early version of “Over My Head” appears on the 2018 reissue of Fleetwood Mac.
Backed by a $25,000 AM radio campaign, the remixed “Over My Head” received solid radio play in key secondary markets (Graham, 1978, p. 138). The single reached #20 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in the winter of 1976 — Fleetwood Mac’s highest-charting single in the United States at the time.
The remixed single version appears on The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac (2002), Fleetwood Mac (2004 reissue), and Fleetwood Mac (2018 reissue).
